Working it Out

Things have been getting a bit tense between Arthur and Harrington again.  The business is doing well, and Arthur is doing good work, but as Harrington has grown accustomed to Arthur’s presence around the office, he has become more officious.  In his turn, Arthur reacts badly to nearly every order Harrington gives him.  On Friday I was worried that he would snap at his father, and though he managed to hold his tongue, both of them felt the strain.  Neither…

An Unnerving Exchange

I just had the strangest conversation. I was in heaven, waiting for Danit so I could fill her in on my charges.  These reports are no longer required, of course, but I enjoy talking over my charges with someone who knows and loves them and who has much wisdom to offer.  But Danit was busy with a younger Cupid, so I was at leisure, enjoying the quiet. It is not correct to say that Eburnean’s arrival disturbed that quiet—they came…

Watching Out for a Restless Heart

A marriage is a difficult thing to get started even when it begins traditionally, with time for both sides to get used to the idea.  It is even more difficult when it happens suddenly, as if on a whim, between two people who live in different cities. All that being said, I think it is going well between Gabrielle and Nick.  She drives down to see him on weekends, and they talk every day, working out plans to come.  They…

An End, I Hope

Lubos called to me this evening as I was returning from my work.  “I have reason to believe that this will be an eventful evening for Freya and Peter,” he told me.  “I would like you to be present, if you will.” How could I say no?  And, as usual, my brother’s instincts were correct.  The evening was certainly eventful. We arrived at the same moment that Peter did.  It was a rainy evening in Boston, and he stepped into…

A Bit of Honesty

It was Scott, I believe, who wrote about the tangled webs humans weave with one another.  There would be so much less hurt and confusion in the ways of love if people could just be honest about their feelings and desires.  But honesty is one of the hardest things to give someone else, especially if that honesty will lead to pain for them or for oneself. Elaine stayed over at Ted’s house this weekend, and this morning he sat her…

The Little Ones

Before you ask, little Truman is doing well.  I should not call him that anymore—it was only a nickname, and now he has a real name of his own: Shepherd Randall Newman.  Grace and Con are already calling him Shep for short, and the first gift he ever received was a stuffed sheep from his grandfather. Shep is the most delicate human I have ever seen—his sheep dwarfs him, and it has to be wrapped in plastic while it lies…

Birth

What a long and frightening and exhilarating day. Today, at Grace’s appointment, her doctor stepped out of the room for a moment to get test results and came back looking grave. “Grace,” he said as the smiles on Con and Grace’s faces disappeared, “I have bad news.” What we feared has come to pass—Grace has preeclampsia, a severe condition that brings danger to both mother and child. To avoid any of the harsh consequences, she had to be induced right…

Day One

Arthur’s first day of work went well. He met Harrington’s assistant, Michael, with whom he was already somewhat familiar, and they get along well. He helped organize the office a little bit and sat in on a phone meeting between Harrington and Jared. Afterwards, Harrington took him out to dinner, and they talked about the business and where it was going. It was uneventful, really, which was a good thing for me, because today was also Gabrielle’s first day of…

Sudden but Sure

I am still reeling.  Excitement and concern are spinning in my head and I am not certain which way is up.  And Inca thought Gabrielle kept her running!  This woman is as reckless with her heart as she is with her safety. She went again to see Nick this weekend, more because she felt like she couldn’t keep still than she wanted to see him.  Still, when she saw him waiting for her on his front steps, her heart jumped,…

A Traditional Family

So this evening has been educational. Gabrielle got a message from her mother as she was leaving class together, inviting her to join them for dinner.  She thought about it for a while—which in itself is notable for this particular woman—and then decided to accept the invitation.  I was not invited, of course, but I went along, wanting to learn more about her family. It was not just Gabrielle’s parents who were at the house when she drew up.  Her…
