I now understand what the humans mean when they talk of a broken heart. It has nothing to do with the physical function of that organ, but with the way it makes them feel. In their moments of suffering, the humans feel their isolation and imperfection; they understand best in those dark times that they are trapped in a world where evil hunts them, and the only things that can truly protect them are themselves. In those times, when the heart knows how broken they are, they will do anything to make themselves feel better.
Just as I doubted myself after helping Pamela to end her relationship with Rohan, so she is doubting herself now. She wonders if she has made a great mistake, if she has sent away the only man who will ever offer her the love she desires. To make matters more difficult, Rohan has continued to reach out to her, trying to persuade her to reconsider. His words are loving and compassionate, not at all insistent or angry, and Pamela is severely tempted. But she has been through this before, and she is afraid to trust him again. And without trust, there can be no relationship.
I am keeping close watch on her, trying to protect her. In a month’s time, Rohan will leave for his new job, and the distance will make things easier for both of them. In the meanwhile, I consistently encourage Pamela to reach out to her friends. Evelyn especially has been very fierce in defense of Pamela—almost too fierce, but it is a force that comes from love, and I can use that.
I do not know how to make Pamela move on. I am not sure I even want her to. If Rohan can find his feet, he and she may have a second chance. That is clearly what she wants, but she is wise enough to see that it cannot happen now. Now if only he could see that, too.
Perhaps I will try to work with him for the next few days.
